To transfer or not to transfer?

I am currently a Communications major at a private college in Buffalo, NY. I attended the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts summer program this summer and living in the city made me finalize my decision to move to NYC! I love acting its my passion but im not interested in getting an acting degree, its not practical and theres no way i can waste thousands and thousands of dollars on it. I want to major in Communications at Marymount and still be able to do what i love...hence minor or atleast be involved in theatre. In a perfect world this would be possible but since there is no minor program for theatre at Marymount i feel like im screwed! Should i choose another school? If i didnt take any theatre classes could i still try out for shows at Marymount? Is it likely for non-majors to even have a chance in theatre life at Marymount?

xoxo Jess

I transfered into the Acting program at Marymount two years ago so I can definitely answer your questions

We do have a great Communications department so I think you'd be happy in that respect. The person who posted before me is right, we do have a minor in Theatre, but it's primarily a Theatre studies type of minor, there is only one acting class for non-majors.

Honestly unless you are a major in Acting, you really don't have a chance at doing any of the shows at Marymount. All shows are open for non-majors to audition but the competition is extremely high, more than half of the acting and theatre performance majors will not be involved in any production during their time here. Also all the acting classes are for majors only. If you are interested in other aspects of theatre though, you can take classes in other disciplines without being a major. Through those classes you could probably get involved in the shows in some way but even then the chances are very slim.

Marymount is all about the Theatre majors and Dance majors so those who major in other areas of the college really are not a part of that "clique" and it can be a turn off for some people. So to answer your question, if doing Theatre is really important to you but you don't want to major in it, then I would suggest looking elsewhere unless you can live without doing it at school.

I would suggest taking a look at some of the CUNY colleges, particularly Hunter and Brooklyn, they have good academics and pretty decent Theatre programs, plus they are really cheap! I hope this helps and I wish you luck on the transfer!
